| Built in 1910, the Vancouver Block is one of Vancouver's most recognized landmarks. From 1999-2000 Alfred Horie Construction completely rebuilt and restored the upper 2 floors of the building and Clock Tower. This 90 year old building had recently succumb to water penetrated walls, causing the steel structure to corrode beyond repair. As the steel corroded, it expanded and caused damage to the terra cotta facing of the building. In preparing for the repair work, the terra cotta and bricks were removed piece by piece, then the steel columns and beams where removed and replaced one at a time. After the steel was replaced, the brick and terra cotta were replaced. This process was lengthy, but essential to ensure the structure of the building while maintaining heritage standards. |
